Citrus Thinner
From $24.99
Available sizes: 8 oz and 16 oz
The high-purity, citrus-derived solvent for adjusting the flow of compatible oil finishes and cleaning uncured finishing residue from shop tools.
Oil finishes do not behave exactly the same on every project. Wood density, temperature, application method, and the condition of the surface can all affect how easily a finish spreads and penetrates. Citrus Thinner gives makers a controlled way to adjust that working consistency without introducing a petroleum-based thinning solvent.
Made from high-purity citrus-derived d-limonene, Citrus Thinner can be added incrementally to compatible Bumblechutes oil finishes when a lighter viscosity, easier spread, or greater first-coat penetration is desired. It is particularly useful when working with pure Polymerized Tung Oil, dense wood, end grain, detailed surfaces, or projects where a thinner initial application provides better control.
Its strong solvency also makes it useful for loosening uncured oil residue and cleaning compatible brushes, applicators, tools, and work surfaces. It is a concentrated shop solvent, so a small amount is usually sufficient.
Why it earns a place in the shop
- Adjusts the viscosity and working characteristics of compatible oil finishes.
- Helps early coats spread more easily and work into dense grain, end grain, and detailed surfaces.
- Provides a plant-derived alternative to conventional petroleum-based thinning solvents.
- Breaks down uncured oil and finishing residue for more effective tool and applicator cleanup.
Best for: Thinning Bumblechutes Polymerized Tung Oil and compatible Wood Finish products, preparing lighter initial coats, cleaning uncured finish from compatible tools, and removing oily residue from solvent-resistant work surfaces.
How to use
For thinning a finish
- Pour only the amount of finish needed for the current application into a separate glass or solvent-resistant container.
- Add Citrus Thinner in small increments, mixing thoroughly after each addition until the desired working consistency is reached. Follow the directions for the specific finish and avoid unnecessary over-thinning.
- Apply the adjusted finish according to its label instructions.
- Do not pour unused thinned material back into the original finish container, as this may alter the consistency of the remaining product.
For cleaning tools and uncured residue
- Remove as much excess finish as possible from the brush, applicator, tool, or surface before introducing the thinner.
- Apply a small amount of Citrus Thinner to a compatible cloth, brush, or container and work it into the uncured residue.
- Wipe or rinse away the loosened residue as appropriate for the tool or surface. Repeat with a small additional amount when necessary.
- Allow cleaned equipment to dry completely before storage or reuse.
Choose your size
8 oz: The practical shop size for occasional thinning, smaller projects, brush cleanup, and makers who want Citrus Thinner available without storing a large quantity.
16 oz: The working size for frequent finishing, larger projects, repeated tool cleanup, or use alongside full-size Polymerized Tung Oil and Wood Finish products.
Important handling
Use with adequate ventilation and avoid prolonged skin contact. Wear appropriate gloves and eye protection. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources.
Citrus Thinner may soften or damage certain plastics, adhesives, painted surfaces, or existing coatings. Test compatibility in an inconspicuous area before broader use.
Keep the container tightly closed and stored upright in a cool location away from direct sunlight. Handle and dispose of solvent-soaked or oil-soaked materials according to the product label, Safety Data Sheet, and local requirements. Never leave used finishing cloths piled or wadded together.
Complete the system: Pair Citrus Thinner with Bumblechutes Polymerized Tung Oil when a more penetrating initial mixture or easier application is desired. It may also be used sparingly with compatible Wood Finish products when project conditions call for additional flow. Use only as much thinner as the application requires; excessive dilution reduces the amount of protective finish left within the wood.
